"Possibly the term 'shooting a fish in a barrel' has to do with archery and not guns. Not many cultures (I'm aware of other than USA) would attempt shooting fish with a machine gun. Spear fishing and bow fishing are done in most hunting cultures to some extent. Shooting fish in a confined space would then make more sense and be easier than shooting fish in an open body of water, or would it?"
I have been fishing for fish and frogs with a bow. The only problem is getting use to the fact that the water makes the fish look like they are not where they really are. We would hunt streams because the shallower the water the better. To shot them in a barrel would be to easy.
