Jun 28 2008, 2:33 PM EDT One of the benefits – I guess – of getting older, is seeing fads and other ephemera of times long past come back into vogue. This MIT design appears to be a very close copy of one that I saw in a 1978 issue of MOTHER EARTH NEWS. See: MOTHER'S SOLAR FURNACE Issue 52, pages 94-95 November/December 1978 http://www.motherearthnews.com/Renewable-Energy/1978-11-01/Mothers-Solar-Furnace-Takes-Shape.aspx I think it is terrific to see the concept tried again! We built a small scale version one of these for an Industrial Engineering class while at college (Fall '79). Ours was also equatorially mounted and even had a drive motor to automatically track the mirrors to the sun and reset for the next morning. Recently on the Discovery Channel or Science Channel they had a report about a solar generating plant in Spain, one has been built and two more are being constructed. There is an array of mirrors, much like what this guy has, and they are beamed at a tower where water is heated and turned into high temperature steam, which then powers a turbine. A focusing mirror is not anything new. I believe that that this principle is also being used here in the U.S. down in the Southwest if I recall correctly. Perhaps others can enlighten us all as to what is really new with this guy. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |
