As a pilot, I am not here to debate that the aircraft will take off, but the Mythbusters did not have an accurate test.
As shown in the episode, the aircraft started moving foreward, before the belt was at the same speed, there by off setting the speed of the plane and the belt. The plane continued to accelerate faster than the belt and took off. The best way for this myth to be tested, would be to hold the plane in place, accelerate the belt to the takeoff speed, and then let the plane loose at full throttle.*****PLEASE MYTHBUSTERS, REVISIT THIS MYTH AND USE THIS RECOMMEND TEST FROM A RATED PILOT! Another way of looking at this myth would be a seaplane on a river. The seaplane will be carried with the flow downstream, until the engine can produce enough thrust to over come the pull, and it will sit there, and once it overcomes the flow, it will accelerate and take off. PLEASE REVISIT THIS MYTH.

I have questions regarding this test. First of all a car's indicated speed is produced by gears in the transmission. Thus if the car is moving forward at 25 MPH it is indicated because the speedometer is connected to the transmission. An airplane is different. Its airspeed indicator uses air flowing into the pitot tube. You could blow air into this pitot tube and get an indicated airspeed even without the engine running. If the plane got its speed indicated by the spinning of its wheels, the speed would show 0 once they stopped turning after it took off.
So if the conveyor is moving at 25 MPH in order for the airplane to indicate 25 MPH it HAS to move faster than the conveyor. Perhaps they should have tried this test with a speedometer connected to the planes wheels.

Wow, all i have to say is that this myth is still up for grabs. If you look at the airplane in the last scene compared to the cones, you will see that the airplane had more speed than the truck, making it not stationary. With that more speed the air over the wings was enough to create lift. And if you were to think of the physics of this, you would think hmmmm a truck pulling that type of weight of the "conveyor belt" and having to overcome the friction from the ground compared to the weight of the airplane, the airplane will win every time b/c it is lighter and has less friction to overcome. SO my main point is that they need to go over this again and make sure that the airplane is stationary. That will confirm or bust this myth.

If you're in Sacramento, CBS-13 has a behind-the-scenes feature airing at 10PM tonight (Wed., May 14th)! Adam and Jayme activate their pneumatic cannon, give us a tour, and bust a myth we brought to them! That airs at 10PM in Sacramento, but we will have a ton of extra web content. There is already a preview at: www.cbs13.com. Look in the "Special Investigations" section, or tonight it will be right on the home page!
Adam and Jayme were great, gave us a lot of material and were just plain good guys to work with.

The episoe wher the supposed mythbusters debunkin the "Myth" gunny Hathcock fired through the enemys scope and killing the opponent sniper is erroneous on is face.IF the mytbusters had take the time to examne actual or even reproduction VA era or basically ww2 scopes the NVA were equipped with they would have discovered the scopes utilized buy ur bnemy was very small some 6in long and with some 3-4 very small thin lenses.Actually a 3.5x24mm scope versus th very large multiple thick lenses f the modern thoug inxpensive scopes the mythbuters wer using to basically call Gunny hathcock d hos spotter a liar.Had they7 simply examined e scopes ion question in person simply looked at potos they would have realized thier experiment was in no way compartable to the incident that the "mythbusters called "busted"Just about the worst researched experimet ive ever encountered parcularly by foks with umpteen years of special effects between them and a slap in the face of a man they wouldnt make a pimple on his butt. Disgracefull!! As a former sniper with the 82nd ABN i find the episode
disgrace to the armed forces nd Guny hathcock who unfortunately isnt here to defed himself having died long before his time due to exposure to agent orange and service connected injurys sustained while saving his felow troopers from a burning APC.Shame on you sirs.

I HAVE A QUESTION THAT HAS BEEN HAUNTING ME FOR YEARS??
JUST BEFORE THE KICKOFF, AT THE START OF A FOOTBALL GAME, OR AFTER A TOUCHDOWN, AND THE KICKER SQUEEZES THE FOOTBALL BEFORE PLACING IT ON THE KICKING TEE, WHAT IF ANYTHING DOES THIS DO TO THE FOOTBALL? HAVE THE ENGINEERS FROM WILSON SPORTING GOODS, OR ANY OTHER FOOTBALL MANUFACTURES MADE ANY SCIENTIFIC STUDIES ON THE SUBJECT? DOES IT CHANGE THE SHAPE, SQUEEZE AIR OUT, THUSLY MAKING IT MORE AERODYNAMIC? I BELIEVE(AND I HAVE BEEN WRONG BEFORE) IN NEWTON'S THIRD LAW OF RELATIVITY THAT FOR EVERY ACTION THER IS AN OPPOSITE AND EQUAL REACTION, THERFORE SQUEZZING THE FOOTBALL BEFORE PLACING IT ON THE TEE DOES ABSOLUTLEY NOTHING TO THE FOOTBALL AT ALL!!! WHAT IS YOUR TAKE ON MY THEORY?

| jecepede | Talking to plants... WRONG ! |

Aloha !
Of all the non exploding myths, the "Talking to plants" myths still bugs me the most. It bugs me so bad, that I think they should revisit this one..... Ok, why ? What went wrong ? What did they do ??? They tried to see what would happen if one would talk to plants. Will it make them grow faster or will they shrivel and die? As a side dish, the treated the plants to some music too. But wait a minute... Did you see Kari, Tory or anyone else go up the roof and actually TALK to the plants ? noooooooosurryyyyy.... Now you are going to say : "Wo wo wo dude, they had I love you love you love you recordings playing. And THAT is exactly what went wrong there... The myth is not : Will sound vibrations make plants grow better, it is : Will TALKING to plants make them grow better. Then the narrator Robin Banks protests : "If the build team would stay all the time, they could skew the result by the carbon dioxide in their breath" I think the breath is actually a key factor in this whole myth... So in a revisit they should do these things : 1 - Find out what kind of gasses are exhaled in like ten mins of talking. 2 - Find out how long people actually talk to their plants (for example three times ten mins a day 3 - Rebuild the greenhouses again and setup a rig that "breathes" on the plants three times a day for ten mins, AND plays the I love you love you love you recordings for ten mins at the same time... And a small tip : Don't let the water system fail this time... Ok, that is my two-euro-cents.... Greets, Jessy - The Netherlands....

Is talking on the cell phone as bad as driving drunk?
As Adam stated at the end of the show you can turn off a cell phone but you can't turn off being drunk. Therefore the cell phone is not as deadly as driving drunk. that means myth was BUSTED not confirmed. Yes talking on the phone is dangerous but not something you can't stop doing if a situation calls for it.

we know a hammer isn't likely to help you when falling off a tall bridge, but can a grenade
launcher fired at the water do anything for you? I think it might produce enough gas bubbles in the water to cushion the fall. |
