Myth Title: Yodel Avalanche


Myth Description: Can yodeling cause an avalanche?


MythBusters on the bust: Adam & Jamie


Hypothesis: The different sound frequencies generated by yodeling could be enough to trigger an avalanche.


Procedure/Experimental Design: Take a professional yodeler, stand next to a mountain with potential for avalanche and have them yodel as much as possible until something does or does not happen.


Results: The yodeler, before and after amplification (with a megaphone) cannot make the mountain avalanche with her voice.

Conclusion: Yodeling does not cause an avalanche.

Your Scientific Method

Did the MythBusters get it right? How would you have busted this myth differently? Share your experiment design for how you would prove/disprove this myth:

  • Why not try her at the top of the mountain? In most movies and commercials, yodelers stand at the tops of mountains, not at the bottom.
  • They proved that THAT heap of snow didn't avalanche, but that didn't prove that yodeling can't begin an avalanche: the snow in question was obviously too stable to be collapsed so easily, but it was one single instance of heaped snow. A statistical sample of 1 is bogus.

Me too it almost became common knowege that Yoodling or even a loud noise would set one off.
