Toilet Paper Noose
Name of Myth: Toilet Paper Hangman
History/Background of the Myth: There's several versions that I've heard about this single myth.
The version I heard, is about a prison inmate who commited suicide by hanging himself with a noose made out of toilet paper. The story goes, the inmate took individual sheets of toilet paper, soaked them in water, and wrapped them around each other, and modeled a noose out of the sheets. When the toilet paper sheets dried they somehow, through some freak-of-nature molecular restructuring process, became so strong that they could support his own weight. Of course the guards and other inmates didn't think it could do this, but he was smart (or stupid, whichever you think) enough to think this would work. However, when the guards awoke next morning and came to check on the inmates, there they found the man dead, hanging from the ventilation duct, feet hanging off the ground. -Paints quite a picture in your head, doesn't it?
Hypothesis of the Test: Not many sources to go by. Prison myths are kinda hard to track down. However there were a couple of facts in the story I was told.
The noose was built over a period of 2 to 3 months. The noose was made in three separate parts: the ring that his head went through, and the long rope like thing that was attached to the ventilation duct with another, smaller, ring. The smaller ring was pre-attached to the vent shaft, where the rope part was latter attached to that. The three parts were joined by some more toilet paper sheets. The exact brand, shape, and diameter of the toilet paper sections is unknown. As is the prison where this happened at. (Why that always is? I don't Know.) Also unknown was the amount of toilet paper sheets used, and the volume of water used.
What is known, however, is the general shape of the noose: a small ring attached to a larger ring by a rope-like thing, pretty much a pair of handcuffs. As is the estimated weight of the man: about 230 pounds. Plus the height he got off the ground: about 2 inches. As well as the estimated length of the rope part: around a foot-long. And it must have looked stupid enough, because the guards didn't confiscate it. Or it at least looked weak enough that most people would think it won't hold any kind of weight.
I guess the Mythbusters can wing it.
Ideal MythBuster(s) to Conduct the Test: Jamie & Adam, mostly because they're the only ones competing against each other on the show. Or possibly Kari, Torry, & Grant, as they've had a few competitions before.
Best Method to Conduct the Test: Again, another Mythbusters competition, between Jamie & Adam. Kind of like the Paper Crossbow competition and the Salsa Escape competition.
Or possibly a competition between Grant, Tory, & Kari. Similar to the 7 Paper-Fold Myth, where they competed to see if it was possible in small-scale before they went full scale.
It will be a competition to see who can build a better design for the toilet paper noose. And by better I mean stronger & more able to hold lots of weight.
My Prediction: Confirmed. You can build a toilet paper noose strong enough to support an average man's weight.
