Myth Title: Speed Boat Jump Survival

Myth Description:
In Live and Let Die, James Bond is driving a speed boat. He jumps the boat over a levy & the sheriff to escape Mr Big's henchmen.

MythBusters on the bust: Adam Savage, Jaime Hyneman

Hypothesis:

Procedure/Experimental Design:
Adam creates a small scale "bayou" to test the boat-jumping theory in small scale. Adam decides he get to RC this one and learns that not all things are as easy as they look!.
Hitting the ramp "dead" center is key to the jump, however hitting the rapm at all could be the biggest problem they face.

To go full scale, they buy a similar boat to the one in the movie & fit it with remote controls. Heading to a not-so-secret secret location, they build the ramp to 18 degrees so that a 45 mph boat can jump at least 70 feet.

Results:
The boat made it up the ramp & over the police car. However, it was off-center & it rotated sideways. It landed upside-down.

Conclusion:
Though the jump was not perfect, the hull was in tact. So, it seems possible should the boat land correctly.

Highlights of the bust:

  • Jamie watches Adam trying to dial it in.......again and again and again......
  • Lets see how fast adam can really talk as he explains the RC and Servos and ........WOW!

Your Scientific Method

Did the MythBusters get it right? How would you have busted this myth differently? Share your experiment design for how you would prove/disprove this myth:

  • They actually did the stunt in the movie anyway. The Mythbusters may not have the benefits of a land levy to duplicate the stunt, but the test did show the boat can make the jump and land intact compared to say all those car stunts ('Dukes of Hazard' and 'Knight Rider') that left the car smashed upon landing.

  • No question in my mind that they did it. Got into the Guiness book with the world's longest boat jump at that time, 114 feet, using a stern-drive V-4 equipped Cobia speedboat. Check with Guiness, it may still be there!
  • Wish they would have contacted the James Bond Collection/Museum in Kanakee IL. I think they have the actual boat from that movie along with the little Q HIgh Speed Jet Boat .

Wonder if they will try the 360 degree barrel roll!
