I would conjecture that the bullets had not stabilized from the muzzle jump that occurs when a bullet move from spinning about it centre of shape to its centre of mass on leaving the barrel. The best example of this effect can be found in Hatcher’s Notebook. (Hatcher’s Notebook, J.S. Hatcher 1962 Stackpoole. Harrisburg PA.) In Chapter 17 Note 22 “Bullet Penetration in Various Mediums” he has two photographs. One shows a 30-06 bullet fires from 500 yards drilling through 30+inches of oak plank. While a similar bullet from 100yard only makes it through 12 inches of oak. (Mind-you it practically destroys the plank by turning sideways.
The photos clearly show that at 100 yards the bullet still is not pointed in the direction of motion while at 500 yards they have had time to stabilize and are travelling true. The bullets were turning sideways in the sniper scope in this experiment in the same way as they did in the oak planks in Hatcher’s experiment. |
