The Myth

THIS MYTH WAS FEATURED IN...
Episode Title: Episode #97: Airplane on a Conveyor Belt

Original air date:January 30, 2008
Myth Title: Shaving Foam Shenanigans

Myth Description:
If you freeze a can of shaving cream & cut it open, will it expand to fill a car?

MythBusters on the bust: Tori Belleci, Grant Imahara

Hypothesis: The can & contents under pressure will thaw & expand.

Procedure/Experimental Design:
They froze a can, cut it open & threw it into a car. It barely expanded. They did the same with 50 cans. While more impressive, it didn't work.

So, with 25 gallons of A B foam (a 2 part hardening foam), they go for replicating the myth.

Results:
Without the air pressure behind the shaving cream, it only expands about the amount it does from the thaw.

Conclusion:
Shaving Cream by itself (without the can to pressurize & direct it) does next to nothing.

Depends on the shaving foam. Most cans of whipped cream and shaving foams today come in a two part can. In one part is the shaving cream or cream to be whipped, and it is separated from the propellant (usually now an inert gas such as nitrogen. However, the foam itself, once it leaves the can does seem to bubble up and foam. I doubt that one can could fill a car, but it would be interesting to see how much you can get out of can. But you wouldn't have to freeze the can in order to open it, just press the button. The propellant merely get the stuff out of the can and onto your hand or whatever.
