The Myth

THIS MYTH WAS FEATURED IN...
Episode 72: Underwater Car

ORIGINAL AIR DATE: 1/24/2007
Myth Title: ---- 7 Paper Fold

Myth Description:
---- You cannot fold a piece of paper more than 7 times.

MythBusters on the bust: ---- The Build Team (Kari, Grant and Tory), The Mythbusters in the "Mythbuster style" of the myth.

Hypothesis: ---- A piece of paper cannot be folded more than 7 times.

Procedure/Experimental Design:
---- The Build Team each tried to fold a piece of 8.5" by 11" 7 or more times. Then, the Build Team teamed up with the Mythbusters for the "Mythbuster-Style" build- to make a huge sheet of paper and see how many times they got that to fold.

Results:
---- Grant got the paper to fold 7 times, but somebody would usually do fold in half, turn 90 degrees, fold in half, turn 90 degrees, etc., but if you just fold in half until you can't anymore, don't turn 90 degrees. After you can't fold that way anymore, you turn 90 degrees and fold, and then you can get 7 folds. In the "Mythbuster-Style" one, they got 11 folds (using a huge piece of paper, 17 of those rolls)

Conclusion:
---- You can fold a sheet of paper more than 7 times, it takes technique and or size.

Your Scientific Method

Did the MythBusters get it right? How would you have busted this myth differently? Share your experiment design for how you would prove/disprove this myth:

  • If you keep folding the paper in the same direction it gets thicker and thicker on one side. I spread the folds evenly. This way I managed to fold an A4 standard 10 times. This is how it works. You fold the paper into section A and B. After this I don't fold (AB) but I fold A and B both in the opposite direction of the first fold. At last I have a thick long strip that I fold in the same way into a neat thick small package.
