Why can't you just point a telescope towards the landing sites on the moon? Landing confirmed!!!

In the episode you put helium in a football to see if it would go further and it actually when a shorter distance. I would have liked to see you put SF6 in there since it is heavier than air.

I grew up on a farm. I'm really tired of obnoxious idiots explaining to me how they went cow tipping in collage. Cow tipping is a bold faced lie in my opinion. First cows sleep laying down. Second they can smel, see, and hear you coming so they are unavailable. Not like they stand around waiting for drunk frat boys to come around. Go in a cow pasture and see how close you get. Third they have four legs and weigh over a 1000 lbs. so how are three or four 200 lb guys going to knock one of them over even if they could get close. Please I beg you to put this myth to rest. I'm tired of listening to bold faced liers making impossible claims. This one is so obvious and implosible that you would think it wouldn't be an issue. But never underestimate the ability of city boys to lie through their teeth. .. Understand if the animal rights issue might pose a problem but you could possibly simulate. Point out that cows sleep laying down. Have someone try to sneak up on one in the dark. Good luck. Not going to happen since cows can see, hear, and smell you coming and you can't even come close to sneaking up on them. You could also construct a 1400 lb statue on four legs and have a few drunk collage kids try to knock it over. Never happen. . You can't even push a cow over with a front end loader much less a few drunk frat boys... Sure you've heard the myth...question is .. can you disprove it ... I challenge you... can you disprove this very common myth ? apologize if you already disproved this myth and I missted that episode? Otherwise you have a challenge.
Take Care. Dave |

| beades | You HAVE to revisit the "anyone can land an airliner" myth | 5 | Wednesday, 5:11 PM EDT by hakan737 | |

As you've likely heard from many others, your session in the NASA simulator wasn't even remotely close to the complexity of landing a real airliner in real conditions. I suggest you do one of two things to revisit the myth:
1. Use an airline's simulator for an actual heavy aircraft --say a 767 -- and try to land it with nothing but radio instructions, in various weather and traffic conditions. I *guarantee* you won't be able to do it. 2. This is less likely to happen -- there are probably FAA regulations against it -- but the ultimate test would be for one of you to take the first officer's seat in a real, flying airliner, with a highly experienced captain beside you. Let the captain talk you through things until you were in real danger of crashing the aircraft. Which, I guarantee again, would happen very quickly. Implying that someone with no flight experience could safely land a large jet with nothing but verbal instructions is kind of like saying that a complete novice could get an ocean liner into port with nothing but an expert talking him through it on the phone. On the first try. Sure, it's not utterly impossible, but it's very very very unlikely. |
