The Myth

THIS MYTH WAS FEATURED IN...
Killer Washing MachineEpisode 9: Chicken Gun, Octopus Egg Pregnancy, Killer Washing Machine

ORIGINAL AIR DATE: 1/18/2004
Myth Title: ---- Killer Washing Machine

Myth Description:
---- A man stuffs 50 ponds of laundry in a washer but gets stuck trying to stuff it in all the way and accidentally sets the washing machine off. As he spins around getting bleach and detergent in his eyes, his dog ends up peeing on the mess causing a small explosion. The washer goes into spin and he dies.

MythBusters on the bust: ----Jamie and Adam (the originals).

Hypothesis: ---- Test to see if 50 pounds of clothes can fit and determine if you can get stuck in it and spin around. Finally can dog urine cause an explosion when mixed with bleach and detergent.

Procedure/Experimental Design:
---- First Adam and Jamie went to the local dog park and proceeded to gain samples of dog urine. Second they procured a large washer and installed it and ensured it was operations. They then obtained 50 pounds of clothing from a local thrift store.

Results:
---- The myth suffered from several problems which lead to overall doubt concerning the myth:
  1. Every available model of washing machine could not be operated with the top opened due to a safety switch.
  2. Even with the largest model available, they could not get 50 pounds of clothing to fit in.
  3. Full as it was, Adam could easily stand on the clothing and not sink.
  4. The washer lacked the proper torque to spin the clothes.
  5. The was not powerful enough even with all of the safety devices stripped.
  6. There was no explosion from either urine samples.

    Conclusion:
---- In a first for Mythbusters, there was not one part of the myth that was true. Not one.

Easily one of my favorite myths. It stands as one of the first times they clearly showed that not one part of the myth was true. Usually when you look at myths there is a kernel of truth. Not here.
