The Myth

Original air date: 10/27/2004
Myth Title: Killer Deck


Myth Description: An ordinary deck of cards can turn deadly when you throw the cards the right way.


MythBusters on the bust: Adam Savage, Jaime Hyneman


Hypothesis: The spinning & velocity of the card can create a deep slicing wound in a person.


Procedure/Experimental Design: After Adam's failed design that mimiced human motion in throwing a card. Jaime built a miniature pitching-machine-like device that will whip the cards at a target. After testing with ballistics gel, Jaime feels there is not enough possibilty for serious damage. So, he stands in front of the card-throwing machine.


Results: Jaime's injury was a "paper cut", at best.


Conclusion: While the speed is more than fast enough, there just is not enough mass to do any real damage.

Guys you just can't leave it like you did.
There is a pro poker player by the name of chris 'jesus' Ferguson who can cut a large carrot in half.
He could put the guy you had on to shame PLEASE check him out.
With his speed and force I'll bet he could cut someones neck and hit the corrarted artery and the person would bleed to death.
Please try it with the neck you will get a kill for sure.

Dear Mythbusters Team,

I was just watching this episode and the first thing that came into my mind was that you guys didn't try using different types of playing cards.

A couple months ago, I bought a pack of plastic Bicycle playing cards from Target. I think those cards would be ideal for this myth due to the fact that they are a little heavier and much more durable than the regular paper cards.

Also, I would like to see what would happen if you were to use metal playing cards.

I really hope you guys revisit this myth because i know that these different cards should yield different results.
