Myths

The Myth: Dimples make objects travel further by creating an area of turbulence

Hypothesis: if a dimpled golf ball travels straighter and further than a non-dimpled ball, apply the technology to bullets and vehicles.

My Busting Strategy: Wind tunnel, small scale, of golfball and car, to determine if dimpling reduces drag. Next, construct a drop tube and measure speed at which a ball falls, first, undimpled, then dimpled. Fire two bullets, one dimpled, one regular, into a block of ballistics gel to determine if velocity of dimpled round was higher. Finally, full scale testing with two identical cars, one dimpled, one not. Cars are driven on a test track with one gallon of gas, at the same speed, and determine if their is a difference in fuel consumption.


The Myth: HVAC Blower, continuously on, reduces home temperature

Hypothesis: Running the blower on your central air, 24 hours a day, circulates air keeping a uniform temperature in your home.

My Busting Strategy: Two identical houses, built side by side. Run Blower on one all day, measuring temperature every hour and energy use for the day. Second house, the blower only runs when the A/C kicks on. At the end of the day, compare power consumption and intenral temperature. To make things interesting, Burt and Les are on one team, in the constant circulation home, while Mike Nelson and Alton brown are kicked back enjoying the day in the periodic home.
