I think that is totslly possible they made it alive. However, I have a feeling that maybe one of the three fell out of the boat, and brought a paddle with him, that is how it wound up on Angel Island. As for the boat, I think Frank Morris and the Anglins might've covered their tracks and destroyed the boat, sending it to the botom of the bay.

We know the 3 men escaped at least to the waters of San Francisco Bay. Could they have made it alive to shore? If the movie is accurate, then the 3 men started paddling & kicking todgether which would be faster than one kicking / paddling. With 3 men, it also provides support if one or more become fatigued / hypothermic. I've been in 62 degree water in a Lake Michigan 1.0 mile swim & it is a shock to the body. To recover from the initial shock, requires immediate and continued strenuous activity to not only warm the body, but counter the strength of the current. At 55 degrees, the cold would be even worse and the loss of body heat is even faster. And, I doubt the inmates were in adequate physical condition for this endeavor. How fast & in what condition do the Alcatraz Triathlon swimmers reach shore with wet suits on? More research (3 paddlers with a raft at night & no wet suits) on the swim section would help clarify the possibility, but I agree it's plausible.
