EPISODE TITLE: Episode 78: Walking on Water

ORIGINAL AIR DATE: 4/25/2007

SYNOPSIS: It's "East Meets West" in this episode of MythBusters. Shrouded in secrecy and mythology, not to mention cult popularity, ninjas are perfect fodder for the MythBusters. The whole team joins forces to pit science against martial arts mystique. Can ninjas run on water as movies like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon would have us believe? In "Walking on Water," Adam, Jamie and a ninjitsu master try their luck at aquatic agility. And if that doesn't work, the boys get confrontational as they compete to see how ninjas — masters of illusion — could create the impression of water running. In "Samurai Swing," Kari, Tory and Grant find out if a ninja could stop a samurai sword with his bare hands. To avoid the sharp sting of steel the team devises a ninja rig to clap onto the sword, and it seems like this myth is all in the timing.

Highlights of This Episode:

Best Quotes by the MythBusters:

  • A couple of good quotes from Adam in the "Ninja Special" show: Testing the Walking On Water myth, Adam designs some "floating shoes" (made of styrofoam;lots of buoyancy) and goes to test them out in a large indoor swimming pool. But they are large, and cumbersome; it's nearly impossible to walk around in any kind of normal fashion with them on. Indeed, on his first attempt to even step into the pool, he misjudges and falls face first, into the pool. "If I had any dignity, that would have been humiliating"! Such is the difficulty in trying to move around with these things. He tries again from the same spot, and successfully steps into the pool, and they are actually buoyant enough to hold him up and allow him to stand while floating on the water. But they are so unstable that it takes all of Adam's effort just to keep his balance and coordination to keep from falling over. As he's visibly struggling to maintain his balance on these unwieldy cumbersome floating shoes, he does his best to strike a 'ninja pose', and, still struggling, finds that "Oh! I'm as stealthy as the night"! After a few seconds he gets a little better at it and is able to maintain his balance a little more steadily. He finds more to explore with his new-found powers, though it's still a constant effort to keep from falling over; "Don't I look like silent death?"
  • During the making of Walking On Water, Adam, in ninja persona, refers to Jamie several times as "silent walrus".

I saw the Ripleys episode too, and the major differences were that:
1. his hand followed the arrow
2. he used sound to to try to catch the arrow
3. the arrow was supposedly going only 100 mph

Arrow catching is possible.

Here in Australia you can't go past Anthony Kelly who is the Guinness World Record Holder for Arrow Catching, Paintball Catching, Blindfold Baintball Catching and Most spears caught from speargun underwater.

redixpress Other Problem with Catching an Arrow 3 Feb 22 2008, 4:50 PM EST by redixpress

One thing I haven't seen mentioned so far is this other problem with the "Catching an Arrow" myth. They claim it to be busted, but their testing was inconclusive at best. I considered the testing very incomplete. Several people have mentioned that a moving hand would work quite a bit better- this makes sense and is probably true. However, there's another problem which, to me, seems a more glaring problem with their testing.

Did anyone notice that, when the "superhuman" robo-hand was used, and one of them said that any slower a grab and it wouldn't have worked? WRONG. If you look at the high speed cam, you can see that the hand doesn't even START to close until the arrow's tip is going past (or close to it- don't recall exactly). The hand should start closing before the arrow gets to it so that as the arrow begins to pass through the hand, the fingers are are moving, have some momentum, and therefore have more time & length to grip the arrow shaft as well as more grip due to the momentum.

Assuming they used the same timing for the previous, human-ninja-speed grab attempt, which is very likely, that's even worse- of course it won't be caught; the hand didn't even START to grip the arrow until the feathers were already going by. Now, I know they have a lot of stuff to do in not so much time, but normally Jamie and Adam do a much better job of being thorough and I was very surprised that they were so slack in not just the analysis of results but also the very small number of tests and variation of, well, variables. Don't get me wrong- I love the show- but segments like this one greatly cheapen it to, "Ooooh look at us we're making ROBONINJAS," rather than an at-least-mostly scientific method-using show that's also entertaining. When the show switches over to mainly entertainment & largely disposes of the scientific thinking, Mythbusters will Jump the Shark, so to speak.
