EPISODE TITLE: Episode 61: Deadly Straw, Hurricane and Chicken Feathers, Horticultural House of Horrors

ORIGINAL AIR DATE: 9/6/2006

SYNOPSIS: Jamie and Adam have been known to shoot wind before but in Straw Through Palm they do it with more devastating speed and accuracy than in MythBusters history. The theory is that in a tropical hurricane the wind can get so strong it can blow a piece of straw through a palm tree trunk. Finally in a cock-a-doodle-doo of a Mythbuster's moment they answer the burning barnyard myth — can a hurricane blow the feathers off a chicken? Meanwhile, Grant, Tory and Kari embrace their sadistic sides and turn the workshop into a horticultural house of horrors.

I"m not a big fan of the universal consciousness idea, but shouldn't you perhaps have used fertilized eggs? Arguably an unfertilized egg is no more alive than..say..a peach. Less so, because the pit in a peach might one day grow into a peach tree, whereas an unfertilized egg will never be a chicken. Or did you use fertilized eggs?

And as for the straw...I think you made an error. By firing many pieces of straw at the tree simultaneously, you decreased the possibility any would penetrate it, just as when one lies on a bed of nails, they are unlikely to penetrate you compared to a bed of..one nail. To do this experiment properly, you should have fired one straw (or reed) at the tree rather than many.
