with the evidence you used I feel the "Death Ray" affect is busted. However, from a tactical perspective, the only way for the ships to attack would be with archers, catapults, etc. so perhaps the mirrors were not meant to set the ships aflame but to blind the enemy, more like Archimedes "Flash light" than "Death Ray".
