My husband and I both work from a home office and are together 24/7. While it's not the same as total isolation from humanity, I definitely relate to this situation at times. Without books, Internet or television, I don't think both of us would be walking out the house at the end of the experiment. ;)

I also lived in Alaska for several years. Fairbanks, not the tropics of the Anchorage area Adam & Jamie were in. A regularly occurring mess is when a tractor trailer hits a moose. Things turn out very, very badly for both parties.

But what I really wanted to comment on is the low-profile factor. Depending on how much tug-down you get from the friction of the vehicle pulling on the critters legs, you gotta figger that the body of the critter is gonna descend at the constant rate of gravity. Thus, if you start out very low and fast, the body is not going to have time to descend to decapitation level.

Now, I am of a very skeptical & scientific bent, and I am oh so aware that anecdotes are not proof, but...

Cruising down the road in my Toyota MR2 Spyder with the top down (needless to say, NOT living in Alaska at the time), lo and behold, a deer materialized in the middle of my path as I rounded a corner on a country road. Even after hitting the brakes, I hit it while doing at least 50mph, I'd say. Here was the damage:

Deep scratches on the driver's side headlight cover and fender; chunk of bumper froufrah knocked out; very light scratch on top of the REAR passenger side fender; and the faintest hint of a scratch on top of the windshield frame.

My then-future-ex-girlfriend swears that a hoof passed within inches of her head, and I'm inclined to believe her. But other than that, we escaped unscathed, and damage was minimal.

Of course, a deer is not a moose. Moose are much, much taller. So a moose would've had a lot further to fall before taking our heads off, wouldn't it?

From my experience, the CRX they used simply wasn't low profile enough. Try an MR2 or a Miata going at a good clip, and I think you'd have to dub this Alasaka myth PLAUSIBLE.

Lastly, a minor quibble: How can a "moose" with plywood legs and STEEL CABLE BONES be considered a realistic facsimile?
