The Myth

THIS MYTH WAS FEATURED IN...
Episode Title: Barrel of Bricks, Peeing on the Third Rail, Eel Skin Wallet

Original Air Date:10/10/2003
Myth Title: Eel Skin Wallet

Myth Description:
Supposedly, eel skin wallets are the cause of credit card magnetic strips being deactivated.

MythBusters on the bust: Adam Savage, Jaime Hyneman

Hypothesis: The charge of an electric eel stays in the skin even after being made into a wallet & demagnitizes a credit card.

Procedure/Experimental Design:
They left credit cards in eel skin wallets & next to magnets. They also place credit cards onto an electromagnet. At 1000 Gauss, swiping the cards over the field then through the card reader, they start to regularly fail. Adam & Jaime could not find 1000 Gauss worth of field in normal, everyday encounters.

Results:
----

Conclusion:
Eel skin wallets are not made from electric eels. They are made from hagfish/slime eels. Even sticking the card into a tank with a live electric eel did not erase the card.
