The Myth

THIS MYTH WAS FEATURED IN...
Episode Title: Episode 6: Lightning Strikes Tongue Piercing, Tree Cannon, Beat the Breath Test

ORIGINAL AIR DATE:11/7/2003
Myth Title: Beat The Breath Test!

Myth Description:
Can the breath tester be beaten by various methods of objects or mints in the mouth while blowing into the tester?

MythBusters on the bust: Adam Savage, Jaime Hyneman

Hypothesis:Sucking on some substance will trick the breathalyzer and register less than a .08% BAC.

Procedure/Experimental Design:
The mythbusters tried sucking on pennies, mints, mouthwash, batteries, onions, fake teeth, and other things.

Results:
Everything they tried failed to prevent the breathalyzer from registering an alcohol content and substances like the mouthwash actually increased the reading due to the alcohol in the mouthwash. Duh.

Conclusion:
The breath tester tests the chemical in your breath that comes out of the blood transfer in your lungs, not the smell in your mouth.
